Semantic Need: Guiding Metadata Annotations by Questions People #ask

چکیده

In its core, the Semantic Web is about the creation, collection and interlinking of metadata on which agents can perform tasks for human users. While many tools and approaches support either the creation or usage of semantic metadata, there is neither a proper notion of metadata need, nor a related theory of guidance which metadata should be created. In this paper, we propose to analyze structured queries to help identifying missing metadata. We conduct a study on Semantic MediaWiki (SMW), one of the most popular Semantic Web applications to date, analyzing structured “ask”-queries in public SMW instances. Based on that, we describe Semantic Need, an extension for SMW which guides contributors to provide semantic annotations, and summarize feedback from an online survey among 30 experienced SMW users.

Using RDF to Annotate the (Semantic) Web

Collections of annotations need indexes for certain of their properties. When we have a set of created annotations, we want to be able to ask questions concerning these properties such as: agency: "Who said this?"; timing: "is this the most recent annotation about this object?"; the annotated object itself: "What annotations have been made about this object?"; and content: "Which objects which ...

Treating metadata as annotations: separating the content markup from the content

The use of digital learning resources creates an increasing need for semantic metadata, describing the whole resource, as well as parts of resources. Traditionally, schemas such as Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) have been used to add semantic markup for parts of resources. This is not sufficient for use in a ”metadata ecology”, where metadata is distributed, coherent to different Application Pr...

The Semantics of Semantic Annotation

Semantic metadata will play a signi cant role in the provision of the Semantic Web. Agents will need metadata that describes the content of resources in order to perform operations, such as retrieval, over those resources. In addition, if rich semantic metadata is supplied, those agents can then employ reasoning over the metadata, enhancing their processing power. Key to this approach is the pr...

MPEG7ADB: Automatic RDF annotation of audio files from low level low level MPEG-7 metadata

MPEG-7, a ISO standard since 2001, has been created recognizing the need for standardization within multimedia metadata. While efforts have been made to link the higher level semantic content to the languages of the semantic web, a big semantic gap remains between the machine extractable metadata (Low Level Descriptors) and meaningful, concise RDF annotations. In this paper we address this prob...

Retrieval of MPEG-7 based Semantic Descriptions

With the growing amount of people using the Internet, and creating digital content and information, knowledge retrieval becomes a critical task. Knowledge retrieval allows people to find content they search for when they need it. Ongoing efforts provide frameworks and standards for annotating digital and non-digital content semantically to describe resources more precisely and processable in co...
